Nicknamed the “Gathering Place”, the island of Oahu is home to Pearl Harbor and Hawaii’s capital city, Honolulu. At just under a million people, it is the most populated of all the Hawaiian Islands. Oahu is Hawaii’s tourism hub, hosting over five million visitors each year. If you’re planning a trip to Oahu, here are a few things to keep in mind.
Weather: Oahu’s average temperature is around 70–85 °F. The island is the warmest from June through October. The winter is slightly cooler, but still warm, with an average temperature of 68–78 °F. The leeward (south) side of the island receives less wind and rain than the windward side.
Where to Stay: Most beachside resorts are located on the leeward side due to warmer and drier weather. Waikiki Beach (east of Honolulu) and Ko Olina (west of Honolulu) are the main areas. Waikiki Beach is a bigger hub of activity, where you will find more activities, designer boutiques, and nightlife. Ko Olina is a bit quieter, and you will need a rental car for transport.
Getting Around: Getting around without a rental car on Oahu is easy and may even be preferable. Parking on Oahu is scarce, traffic is almost always heavy, and the resorts can charge as much as $40/night to park.
Fortunately, Waikiki caters to pedestrians. The beaches, shops, and restaurants are all within walking distance and you will feel safe and comfortable on foot, even at night. At $5 a day, the Waikiki Trolley Pink Line is another great option for getting around easily and cheaply. Additionally, any tours you book will likely pick you up at your hotel. Rideshares and taxis are also plentiful and reasonably priced in Waikiki and Honolulu.
However, if you would like to rent a car for part of your stay there are plenty of options available. All the major companies have kiosks in Waikiki, as does Hui Car Share, which rents by the hour. You can also support the local side gig economy by renting from Turo.
