Planning a Big Island adventure, but don’t know where to start? The Volcano Adventure Tour eliminates all the guesswork so you can make the most of your limited time on the island. This tour will not only take you to all the top attractions in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, but you will also get a chance to view two amazing waterfalls, walk through a rainforest, and take a scenic drive along a lava-strewn coastline and through historic downtown Hilo.

In addition to taking care of all the planning and driving, this tour also includes a scenic picnic lunch, entrance fees to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and Akaka Falls State Park and will even pick you up and drop you off right at your hotel. Pick-up locations include three Hilo area hotels (and the Hilo airport) and begin at approximately 7:30 am. You can easily select the best pick-up location for you during the checkout process.

You'll be taken to all the Big Island hotspots, including:

Entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island of Hawaii

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park: A visit to Hawaiian Volcanoes National Park is the focal point of this tour, so much of the day is dedicated to exploring the remnants of eruptions past and present. Hawaiian Volcanoes N.P. is home to both Kilauea and Mauna Loa volcanoes, two of the most active volcanoes on Earth.

Some of the stops inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park include:

  • Halema’uma’u Crater Overlook - This overlook offers dramatic views of the crater, located within Kilauea’s main caldera, and the results of the massive collapse that occurred during a recent eruption.
  • Steam vents - Watch the vapor escaping through the cracked surface as the groundwater is heated by molten magma deep underground.
  • Iki Crater Overlook- A smaller pit crater located next to Kilauea’s main caldera that has become a solidified lava lake.
  • Nahuku Lava Tube - You’ll be given the opportunity to walk through Nahuku, a massive lava cave left behind by a river of molten lava more than 500 years ago.
  • Chain of Craters Road - Your guide/drive will take you down this winding scenic road that travels along the coastal portion of Hawaii Volcanoes N.P.
  • Kealakomo Overlook - Enjoy panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and the jagged remnants of lava that has flowed into it.

Additional stops outside the park include:

Akaka Falls: A short hike through a lush rainforest will take you to the viewing platform for the thundering 442-foot Akaka Falls. The route to the waterfall is short (.5-mile loop) and fairly easy - it’s paved and well-marked, though there are some stairs along the way.

Rainbows form on the mist below Rainbow Falls near Hilo

Rainbow Falls: Though much smaller than Akaka Falls, the 80-foot-tall Rainbow Falls can be just as impressive - especially when the sunlight hits just right, creating a stunning display of rainbows in the mist below.

Hilo Town: The tour winds down with a drive through Hilo’s historic district and along its famous Banyan Drive, lined with over fifty banyan trees planted by celebrities (starting in the 1930’s) and today known as Hilo’s “Walk of Fame”. You’ll also drive past the statue of King Kamehameha The Great and around the beautifully landscaped twenty-four-acre Lili’uokalani Gardens, said to be the largest Japanese garden outside of Japan.
