Island Breeze Luau

If you remember only one thing about Hawaiian history, it should be the name Kamehameha. This legendary king united the Islands into one kingdom and towards the end of his life, made his home right here in Kailua-Kona.

Everyone enjoys a luau with their family and loved ones, and none makes Hawaiian history seem as alive as the Island Breeze Luau. This award-winning evening takes place at Kamakahonu (eye of the turtle), the very place where Kamehameha the Great built his Kona estate, which he called Ahu'ena.

After a warm welcome, try your hands at some cultural activities including hula lessons, or get a (temporary) Polynesian-style tattoo while mingling with the performers. Once all the guests have arrived, the imu ceremony begins. An imu is a traditional underground oven lined with hot lava stones. Watch as the oven is opened up to reveal deliciously tender roasted kalua pig.

Once the imu is ready a special highlight begins. The royal court arrives on an outrigger canoe to join the feast – just like they would have 200 years ago!

The opening of the imu also means it’s time to eat! The mouth watering selection of exotic and staple foods is enhanced by the gentle breeze and the glorious sunset. Pick your favorites from the variety of colorful vegetables, fish and meat, savory and sweet dishes. Some of the most popular island foods such as poi, lomi lomi salmon, macaroni salad, and haupia (coconut pudding) are all waiting for you.

Once everyone is happy and full, and the stars have begun to shine in the sky, another highlight awaits. He ‘Ohana Kakou is the name of the award winning Polynesian show at the Island Breeze Luau. It includes live music and dance from around the Pacific region.

He 'Ohana Kakou

This luau provides historical education, cultural activities, an unforgettable show, and delicious flavors from around the islands, all set on the beautiful shore of Kona, on the grounds of the royal residence. Don’t miss out on this unique evening under the stars!
