Maui Snorkel Tours

The Best Snorkeling on Maui - Snorkel Inside a Rare Volcanic Crater!

Why is the Molokini Crater in Maui so popular? The top reason why Maui snorkel tours go to Molokini Crater is because it’s a partially submerged volcano. It’s also an exceptionally unique land formation, with only a few in the world like it. The crater’s crescent shape protects divers from waves and strong currents. The calm and clear water also provides great visibility. Although it varies day to day, it’s not uncommon to have more than 100 feet of visibility at Molokini.

Molokini is a protected area. It’s a designated marine reserve and wildlife sanctuary. Thus, daily moorings are restricted to protect the area. The limits help keep the reef healthy and allow the marine life to thrive. This also prevents the area from feeling too crowded.

The warm water at Molokini Crater offers year-round diving because the water temperature usually doesn’t go below 75 degrees in the winter.

It’s a great spot for beginner to experienced snorkelers. The calm waters inside the crater are good for the inexperienced. Meanwhile, diving off the “back wall” is popular with the more experienced divers.

Maui Snorkel Tours: Things to Know

Although many snorkel tours on Maui go to Molokini Crater, plans can change due to conditions. Your captain will go wherever visibility is best on the day of your tour. Fortunately, South Maui has some of the best diving on the islands, so there are plenty of great alternate dive spots to choose from.

Also, try to book your snorkel trip early in your trip. This way, if it gets canceled due to weather you’ll still be able to reschedule the tour.

Wonderful, enjoyable and an exciting time on our first ever snorkeling adventure. My mom who is a Maui resident signed us up for the morning run. The seas were pleasant and we were outfitted with everything we would need. The entire crew is kind, patient and friendly. My son and I had to get personal instruction once on the water cause we both kinda froze and they saw us right away and helped us get comfortable in the water in our gear. It was so very nice. And after that extra guidance we were well on our way watching the fishes and amazing coral reefs below us. The lunch they provided afterwards on the ride back was delicious too… they cooked it right on the boat, I got the grilled chicken!

We had such an amazing time! ✨️✨️✨️ I would give them 10 stars if I could. Molokini is such a magical and beautiful place. The clearest waters, amazing views, tons of sealife. I will definitely be doing this again. The crew was so fun! They really take care of everyone and make sure you feel comfortable on the boat and in the water.

This was one of the best things I've ever done. The staff make you feel at home from the get go, they learn your names, explain everything well, and you feel very safe in their hands. The food and drinks were delicious and all included. I've been to snorkeling places all over and this ended up being probably my favorite now. We saw all sorts of fish, the water was warm, several turtles, eels, and an octopus. To get up close to each of them as well as all the coral was surreal. Water clarity very high. Views to die for.

Amazing life experience! Can honestly say even though I had never snorkeled before, the crew helped me feel prepared and confident to give it a go by providing me with extra knowledge and equipment to help me feel comfortable. The crew was friendly and knowledgeable (and funny!). Be on the lookout for Malōlo (flying fish) on your way to the crater, they are a treat to see bursting out of the water. We were amazed at the number an variety of fish and other aquatic life we were able to see, and the water was unbelievably clear. So glad we booked this trip, it’s one of the highlights of our whole trip to Maui.

My husband and 7yo daughter went snorkeling today and had so much fun they haven’t been able to stop talking about it! They loved the crew who took really good care of them and made sure they were safe the whole time. There was also a photographer as part of the crew that took amazing photos of them in the water. They saw lots of beautiful fish and sea creatures, it was a real treat. Food was also delicious. They can’t wait to go back!

We had the best time! We spotted whales, 2 types of dolphins, several turtles, sooo many fish, and coral of many colors. The staff was so friendly, and they had many ways to access the water. Someone even had a birthday celebration on the trip! They had the best water slide!… we had so much space and there was no “full contact snorkeling!” Love it. Do it.
