Manta Ray Night Snorkel in Kona
Taking a tour to see the Manta Rays is an absolute "must do" when you're visiting the Big Island. When you arrive for your tour, our crew will inform you of the evening's schedule and make you familiar with the ship. As we leave the harbor and motor South, the sun will be setting and you'll have a unique view from the water. Once everyone has settled in, the crew will give a short presentation on the Manta Rays you're about to see. Ask your guides anything you might be curious about, they have lots of experience on this tour and are ready to share their knowledge. The Manta Rays were first attracted to the viewing site by a light placed in the water by a nearby hotel. People started to notice the Manta coming around to feed on the plankton attracted to the lights. The rest is history.
Once at the viewing site, guests will slide into their wet suits and pull on their masks and snorkels. You can't help but notice the lights glowing under water and the large shadows moving through them. Time to jump in and see the Manta Rays up close and personal! Special floating platforms with lights are tethered to the vessel You hang on to these platforms as you float in the 20 to 30 foot deep water. Manta Rays come towards the lights to feed on the plankton and put on a show everyone there. They do somersaults as the feed and often there will be a dozen or more feeding at once. The biggest ones are 12 to 16 feet wide! It's a sight to see and you won't want to miss it.
On the way back to Honokohau Harbor, your guides will serve coffee, hot chocolate and snacks. Be sure to bring a towel and a jacket. It can get get chilly at night on the ocean.
